How do you examine a Hull ID Selection?

The Hull Identification Selection (HIN) is usually a twelve- or fourteen-character serial amount that uniquely identifies a ship. The HIN is analogous to some VIN on a car.

The main three digits are definitely the Maker’s Identification Code (ex. Boat manufacturer including Sea Ray, Meridian, etcetera.). The 4 digits following that will be the company’s serial amount with the boat. The 3rd and 4th digits with the end will be the date of manufacture. The letter within the date from the manufacture corresponds on the month on the 12 months, i.e. A = January, B = February, C = March and so forth. The last two digits in the HIN variety stand for the product calendar year.

All boats created or imported on or following November 1, 1972, need to bear a HIN, and this HIN should be identified hull id number throughout boat registration. Vessels manufactured or imported right before 1972 are EXEMPT because they often would not have a HIN.

The HIN is located on a steel or plastic plate, normally on the transom with the boat, typically on the proper starboard (suitable) side with the transom inside of two inches of the best of transom, gunwale, or hull/deck joint, whichever is lowest.

On vessels without the need of transoms, or impractical to utilize transoms, the HIN is usually affixed on the starboard (right) outboard side of hull, aft, in one foot in the stern and in just two inches of the top from the hull side, gunwale or hull/deck joint, whichever is most affordable.
